Modern slavery policy

Modern slavery statement

As Lifeway Care Ltd we hold a zero-tolerance stance on acts of modern slavery and human trafficking and on any breach of our ethical standards. We will not condone any such action by our contractors, suppliers or consultants.

We take this issue very seriously and are committed to preventing acts of modern slavery and human trafficking from occurring within our supply chain.

Modern slavery can take many forms and it can be hard to spot, even though it is often happening where we are, but hidden in plain sight. Many people are tricked, traded and trapped into modern slavery by criminals as they try to escape poverty, persecution and conflict.

What is modern slavery?

Modern slavery is when someone loses their freedom and is controlled and exploited by another person or people for personal or commercial gain. It is an umbrella term for many forms of slavery including but not limited to human trafficking.

Modern slavery can take many different forms, but usually includes tricking, threatening or physically forcing people either into work for little or no pay, committing crimes or sexually exploiting them, all to profit the trafficker. This can include holding identity documents such as passports or residence permits against their will.

Where is it happening?

Modern slavery is happening in every corner of the world, and every corner of the UK — not just in big cities but also in small towns and even villages.

It is often hidden, rarely obvious, and could be happening where you live. Demand for cheap goods, cheap labour and cheap sex has created conditions in which slavery and human trafficking can thrive.

Many victims are hidden in plain sight; we could come into contact with someone trapped in slavery in our day-to-day lives without knowing it.

People you see in streets and shops, farms and factories, building sites and bars could be living and working in appalling conditions, held against their will — often not with physical constraints but with violence and threats to them and their families.

What signs should you look out for?

Anyone could come into contact with a victim of modern slavery, or can themselves be a victim, without realising. However, there are some tell-tale signs:

  • Someone looks frightened, unkempt, malnourished or has untreated injuries.
  • Someone else is paying for their travel; speaking for them; picking them up and dropping them off from work at unusual times; or they may not be sure of their own address.
  • Someone may be working and not getting paid, or their pay may go to someone else, and they may not have control over their own life.

We encourage you to trust your instincts: if something does not look or feel right, raise the alarm if you feel safe to do so.
